George William "Bill" Sweeney,88,of Atlantic Beach, FL passed away May 24, 2014.
Bill was born on August 28,1925, to Tom and Regina (Martin) Sweeney, in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
He served in the US Navy during WWII and developed a love for the ocean which he later enjoyed by sailing his Hobie Cat and SCUBA diving.
He had a long career at Bethlehem Steel in Johnstown, PA and was active at St. Clement's Catholic Church in Johnstown and St. Paul's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus in Jacksonville Beach.
Bill's favorite place to be was the gym and he never missed a workout or an opportunity to add a buddy there. He was a powerlifter who set age and weight class records into his 70s.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James, sister Marilyn and daughter Sheila.
Bill is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances Borecky Sweeney and son Mark (Suzy) Sweeney. Uncle Bill will also be missed by many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday,June 7, 11:00 am at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Jacksonville Beach, FL.
