Mary Vernon Lowrey died November 24th at the Earl B. Hadlow Center for Caring following a brief illness. She was born to B.R. Vernon, Sr. and Scottie Elkins Vernon on August 8, 1943 in Shreveport, LA where she graduated from Byrd High School. She attended LSU where she met and married Joseph Laney Lowrey on June 10, 1963.

After living in Germany during her husband’s military service, she settled in Many, LA where she raised her four children and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, until moving to Florida in 1988 with her family, initially living in New Smyrna Beach. The family lived briefly in Gainesville and Longwood before settling in Ponte Vedra and Jacksonville in 1993, where she enjoyed the company of a number of close friends.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, her four children: Ann Lowrey of Alexandria, LA; Patricia Lowrey-Dufour of Baton Rouge, LA; John Lowrey of Albany, GA; and Carolyn Graham of Jacksonville, FL, her brother, B.R. Vernon, Jr. of Jackson, MS, and her dearest friend, Pam Riggs, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.

She took special delight in her nine grandchildren: Alex Stallings and Reid Briley of Alexandria, LA; Robert Lowrey-Dufour, Christopher Lowrey-Dufour, and Nicholas Lowrey-Dufour of Baton Rouge, LA; Alecia Lowrey and Jacob Lowrey of Panama City, FL; and Laney Graham and Rachel Graham of Jacksonville, FL.

At her death, she was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

At Mary’s request, a private memorial service will be held at a later date. She asked that any memorial contributions be directed to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida or Wolfson Children’s Hospital, both located in Jacksonville, FL.
