Ana Mirta Valdivieso
Freyre
July 27, 1937 — August 4, 2026
Jacksonville
Ana Mirta Valdivieso Freyre, 89, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on August 4, 2026.
Ana was born July 27, 1937, in Omaja, Las Tunas, Cuba, to Atilano Froilan Valdivieso and Adelina Austacia Nieves. She arrived in the United States from Havana in August 1958, attending Vashti High School in Thomasville, Georgia, where she graduated in June 1960 and, weeks later on July 15, married José Constantino Freyre. The couple made their home in Palatka, Florida, before moving to Jacksonville in 1972.
Ana’s early years were centered around the many activities and functions at her hometown Methodist church in Cuba. As a young woman she was active in sports, running track and playing volleyball. She loved watching baseball and, especially, tennis, following Wimbledon and the US Open throughout her life. She also played piano and was drawn to true stories over invented ones, filling her bookshelf with biographies of artists, celebrities, and politicians such as the Kennedys and the British Royal family. Music was a joy throughout her life too, from Elvis and the Beatles to Stevie Nicks, Tina Turner, and Michael Jackson. She never turned down a caramel macchiato from Starbucks, a little indulgence she loved right to the end. Spending time with family was her favorite thing to do.
Ana was preceded in death by her husband, José Constantino Freyre, who passed away December 31, 2002; her sister, Zoila Valdivieso Horton, who passed away August 12, 2025; and her granddaughter, Natalie Freyre, who passed away July 21, 2024.
She is survived by her sons, Joseph Nicolas Freyre (Carla) and Paul John Freyre (Tracey); her siblings, Pablo Valdivieso, Paco Valdivieso, Mireya “Mia” Valdivieso, and Martha “Marty” Collenberger; her grandchildren, Joseph Freyre Jr., Alessia Freyre, Caroline Freyre, Emily Freyre, and Franco Beran; and her great-grandchildren, Emerson Beran, Josiah Miller, James Lara, and Jude Lara.
A Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Deermeadows Baptist Church with a reception following in Founders Hall. Interment will be at Jacksonville Memory Gardens.
