Carl Eugene Pegel Sr. "Sorry Dog"

Carl Eugene Pegel Sr., 79, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025, surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Born on November 10, 1945, in Alliance, Ohio, Carl was the son of Elinor (Grace) Pegel and William R. Pegel (Stepfather). He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved son, Carl E. Pegel Jr. (#1 Son “Butch”), and his sisters Tinia Antone and Ellie Pegel.

Carl grew up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and earned his GED while serving his country in the United States Army. He proudly served in the 82nd Airborne Division, earning multiple medals and badges of honor for his dedication and courage.

After his military service, Carl became a certified welder and later founded a successful construction company in Tennessee. Eventually, he made Florida his home, where he spent the past 40 years living life on the water. Known far and wide by his colorful nickname “Sorry Dog,” Carl became one of the most respected yacht brokers in the Sunshine State through his company, Sorry Dog Marine. Stop at nearly any marina in Florida and ask about “Sorry Dog”— you’re sure to hear a story.

Carl’s life was defined by his passion for boats and the sea. He was a builder and creator at heart, whether constructing homes, restoring vessels or crafting his infamous “Boat Car.” He was also an avid reader, history buff, and master storyteller who loved nothing more than sharing tales from his adventures cruising the islands of the Caribbean. Holidays with family and any reason to celebrate brought him great joy.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Debbie O’Steen; stepson, Trae (Traci) O’Steen; stepdaughter, Sofia (Drew) Stilley; and his adored grandchildren, Taylin O’Steen, Wyatte (Wylie) O’Steen, Landry O’Steen, Bailey Stilley, and Rylie Stilley.

Carl was the eldest of 12 children. He is survived by his brothers John (Debbie) Pegel, Bill Pegel, Tony Pegel, Joe Pegel and James Pegel and his sisters Cheryl (Bobby) Price, Mary (Bert) Watts, Teresa Mitchell and Margaret Pegel.

Carl lived a life of adventure, laughter, and boundless energy. He touched the hearts of everyone who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable stories, love, and friendship. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A memorial service celebrating Carl’s life will be held on Friday, October 3, at 2:00 PM at San Jose Catholic Church, 3619 Toledo Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32217. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project or Mayo Clinic ALS Program.

As Carl sets sail on his final voyage, may he find calm seas and steady winds. The marinas of Florida and the islands of the Caribbean will forever echo with the stories of “Sorry Dog,” the man who lived with salt in his veins, laughter on his lips, and adventure in his heart. Though his ship has slipped beyond our horizon, his spirit sails on, guiding us with every sunset and every tide.
