Obituary

Donald “Don” Lee McCoin, 81, of Jacksonville, FL, went to be with the Lord on Good Friday, April 3, 2026.

Born on March 9, 1945, in Tulsa, OK to his father Edward McCoin and mother Dona McCoin, Don spent his early childhood years playing on his grandparents’ farm. He spent his later childhood and early teens attending John Calvin Presbyterian Church (where he met his future wife, Peggy) and was a member of the Boy Scouts of America.

Don graduated from Miami University of Ohio with a dual bachelor’s degree in chemistry and business. In his college years he was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity and played many sports. After graduation he worked for the St. Regis Paper Company. He was later hired by Combustion Engineering and became the Vice President of Basic Chemicals. During his work, Don greatly enjoyed traveling the world, setting up different company divisions. Don later purchased McMillen Bedding Company in Jacksonville, FL with his business partner Gene Sovereign.

When he wasn’t working, Don enjoyed pursuing his passions. He was a member of the Arlington Rotary Club where he was named Rotarian of The Year twice. He was also a member of the Executive Club (where he formed connections with other business owners) and the Hotel Motel Association. Don’s biggest passion was for racing. He was involved in BMW Club Racing with founders Scott & Fran Hughes. He was in the Sports Car Club of America where he raced with his son Bill. They once competed in a 24-hour race where they came in second class at Moroso Track. They had a team called V-Tach Racing which included Bill Jacobs, Bill McCoin and Dave Ogburn. Don taught “Street Survivor Skills” which enabled teenagers to become safer drivers. He also taught Adult Driving Skills to people with high performance cars that didn’t know how to drive them. Don’s pride and joy was his 1957 BMW Isetta, which he & Bill rebuilt and drove whenever he could. His love of cars was made even more apparent by his involvement in various activities of the Concours D’Elegance at Amelia Island.

Don married his wife Julia “Peggy” McCoin in June of 1966. He enjoyed golf, reading, and good humor. He had a knack for driving his children crazy with his puns and dad jokes.

Don is survived by his wife Peggy McCoin, children Dona “Beth” McCoin & William “Bill” McCoin (Sandra), brother Kent McCoin (Dale), sister-in-law Patricia Walter, brother-in-law Kurt Pyka (Ann), son-in-law Michael Jenkins, grandchildren Amanda Parlee (Dylan), Delaney Jenkins-Kuempel (Blake), Liam McCoin-Jenkins, Sabrina McCoin & Alexandra McCoin, and great-granddaughter Lila Parlee.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 3:00pm at Geneva Presbyterian Church and will be officiated by Rev. Dr. Ron Watson.

Don was a charter member of Geneva Presbyterian Church in Saint Johns, FL. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the church in honor of Don’s memory. You can mail such donations to 1820 SR-13, Ste 11, PMB 24 St. Johns, FL 32259.
