Elizabeth Jean Dickard Fowler, known to all as Betty, was born on January 11, 1932, in Cleveland, OH. She was preceded in death by her parents Ted and Leona Dickard. She is survived by her brother Ted Dickard, sister Dolores Atkins, children Janet Hughes (Mike), Judy Brooks, Jeffrey Powell (Rachel), Lisa Matzen (Rob), 4 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandson.
Betty graduated from nursing school and was proud to be a Registered Nurse. Along with working in doctor’s offices and as the Director of Nursing at the original Beaches Hospital in the early 1970’s, she went on to procedural manuals for and inspected plasma donation centers. She was proud that one daughter and two grandchildren followed her course and became registered nurses.
Betty’s motto was “use it or lose it” with regard to health, a testament to her being able to live independently until March of this year. She participated in the Life Study program and the Cancer Prevention Study for over twenty years, feeling research on seniors was invaluable.
Betty loved watching birds and listening to them sing. She had a passion for rescue animals, adopting several with various needs with the hopes of giving them a second chance at a good life. She was an avid and loyal supporter of the Humane Society.
Her wishes were to have no funeral services and for those left behind to celebrate her life in the way that means the most to them.
The family was comforted and blessed by the invaluable encouragement and support they received from Hospice and ask that, in lieu of other expressions of sympathy, donations be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
