Gary Beck, 86, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2025. Born on October 6, 1939, in Washington, D.C., he was the beloved husband of Virginia Beck, devoted father to Laura Howell and Michael Gillette, and the son of the late Ann and Philip Beck.
A scholar and educator, Gary earned master’s degrees in both physics and engineering, achievements that reflected his lifelong passion for knowledge and discovery. He dedicated much of his professional life to teaching radiation physics to X-ray students and residents and delivered countless lectures across Florida. His expertise and commitment made him a respected leader and mentor in his field.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gary’s love for music, art, and literature illuminated his life. Known by many as “Big Ed from Miami,” he played multiple instruments and performed with jazz bands and Big Band groups throughout the years. He also had a fondness for trains, good food, strong drinks, time with family, and watching “Judge Judy.”
He is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia; his daughter, Laura (Josh) and their children Isaac, Ava, and Thomas; his son, Michael (Joline), and daughters Bailey and Jessica; nephews Paul Wheeless and Mark (Jennifer) Solomon and their families; and sisters‑in‑law Joan (Duane) Noerenberg, Susan (Matt) Beaudin, and Cynthia (David) Dirks and their families.
