Karen Kimie Matthews, formerly Wise, nee Ishii, 80, passed away on July 15, 2025, under the care of Community Hospice at Baptist Medical Center South in Jacksonville, Florida. Karen will be lovingly remembered for her quiet grace, gentle humor, and the warmth she brought to those around her.
She was born in Hilo, Hawai’i on May 5, 1945 to Kenji and Hisayo Ishii. She was the seventh of nine children. Her love and creativity for needlework showed in the many clothes, quilts, and tapestries on which she spent countless hours. She enjoyed singing, especially duets with her husband. She was a member of the Jacksonville Ukulele Society and the St. Augustine Strummers Ukulele Group.
She is survived by her husband James J. Matthews, Jr.; daughters Karen Ann (John) Ah Chong of Kea’au, Hawai’i and Deborah Lee Bosma of Kalamazoo, Michigan; step-daughter Lizz (Chris) Holmes of Orlando, Florida; step-sons James J. (Dr. Jennifer Longnecker) Matthews III of Superior, Colorado, and Michael (Gena) Matthews of Tallahassee, Florida; sisters Doreen Usui of Hilo, Hawai’i and Marlene Visaisouk of Toronto, Canada; brother Harley (Martha) Ishii of Mililani, Hawai’i; six grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Per her wishes, no services were held. A private scattering of ashes will be done in Hawai’i at a later date.
