Obituary

Peggy Joyce (Head) Moore, 85, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and a lifelong lover of music, passed away on December 25, 2025.

Born on August 22, 1940 in Toccoa, Georgia to G. Clinton Head and Zephyr Armindia, she was the couple’s youngest child and last of six siblings to pass.

Joyce’s love for music emerged when as a teenager, and she began playing the piano at Hill Street Baptist Church in Toccoa beginning at the age of 14.

She graduated from Toccoa High School and continued as the church’s pianist until her marriage to James Edward Moore in 1958 (who passed away in 2020). After they married, Joyce moved to Atlanta where she supported her husband’s educational pursuits at Georgia Tech. James earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree, and Joyce and other wives of the graduates were honored with a printed award titled ‘Mistress of Patience in Husband Engineering,’ which was proudly framed and displayed in Joyce’s home throughout her life.

Joyce spent her life committed to supporting her family and raising her children, holding several jobs to help support her family. Her favorite employer was Piedmont Airlines in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she made lifelong friends. Music continued to play a strong role in her life. Joyce sang in numerous church choirs and encouraged her children to do the same. She exhibited seemingly infinite patience in driving her children to rehearsals and attending performances. While she appreciated many kinds of music, she would sing or hum old time gospel tunes throughout her life, including just days before her death.

She was a member of Deermeadows Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida before her death, and was previously a member of Ardmore Baptist Church in Winston Salem, North Carolina and First Baptist Church in Toccoa, Georgia.

Joyce is survived by her two children: Mindy Barker of Jacksonville, Florida (married to Col. Glenn Barker Ret.) and Professor James Moore Jr. of London, United Kingdom (married to Professor Bindi Brook); and four grandchildren: James Moore III of Toronto, Canada, Mary Beth McCall of Jacksonville, Florida (married to Cameron McCall), Jack Moore of Portland, Oregon, and Haley Lanigan of Gainesville, Florida, and a great-granddaughter, Rowan Charlotte McCall. She is remembered fondly by her family, including many nephews, nieces and their offspring, for her sweet, wonderful nature and enduring smile.
