Robert Edward Nelson, 89, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida.
Born on January 5, 1936, in Washington, District of Columbia, Robert was the son of Edward Carlton Nelson and Sadie Dilley Nelson. He grew up with a strong sense of duty and service that would later define much of his life.
On January 20, 1954, Robert enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served honorably as a Corporal working in motor pool and military transportation. He was a specialized rifleman until his discharge on January 19, 1957. His time in the Marines remained a source of great pride throughout his life. The discipline and camaraderie he experienced during those years shaped his character and left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
Robert was deeply devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Helen; their children: David of Troy, Missouri; Lisa (Kerry) of Helenville, Wisconsin; Greg (Cindy) of Waukesha, Wisconsin; and Doug (Melissa) of Jacksonville, Florida. He was also a cherished grandfather to eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A man who valued time spent with loved ones above all else, Robert found joy in the simple moments shared with family. Whether gathered around the dinner table or enjoying quiet conversations, he treasured every opportunity to connect with those closest to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Carlton Nelson and Sadie Dilley Nelson.

A Service honoring Robert’s life will be held on August 28, 2025, at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church. Service will start at 11:00am with a meal to follow.
A Burial will be held on August 29, 2025, at 11:30am at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
