Obituary

Sarah Katherine Kelly Reifers, lovingly known as Kathy and affectionately called “Mimi, Mama-K, Mom, Mrs. Mack, Boog, Baby, Aunt Kathy, Miss Kathy, Aunt Kachy, Kafee, Aunt Mimi” passed away on January 9, 2026, in Jacksonville, Florida, surrounded by family. She was 72 years old.

Born on May 25, 1953, in Charleston, South Carolina, Kathy spent part of her early years in Norfolk, Virginia, where she attended Lake Taylor High School. Those who knew her best remember a woman who loved deeply, served quietly, and created spaces where people felt welcomed and cared for.

Kathy was a woman of faith who valued family, devotion, and togetherness. She believed deeply in nurturing relationships and creating a sense of belonging, and her life reflected a steady, caring spirit. Her home was “the” gathering place — she loved hosting parties, celebrating milestones, and bringing people together, especially during the Christmas season, which she cherished dearly.

She took great joy in her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and sister. Kathy was deeply devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, and she delighted in time spent together, shared traditions, and everyday moments. Her presence brought comfort and consistency, and her love will continue to be felt through the generations she held so close.

Kathy expressed her love for others through creativity and service. She had a passion for sewing and baking, often gifting handmade pillowcases, baby blankets, stuffed animals, and lovingly baked birthday and wedding cakes for her family and friends. One of her most meaningful ministries was creating pillowcases for those undergoing cancer treatment — a quiet act of compassion that brought comfort and encouragement to many. She also loved capturing life through her camera, preserving memories of family, celebrations, and the people she loved most.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Mack E. Reifers; her children, Julie Reifers, Elizabeth Stepp, and Olivia Coker (husband Robert Coker); her brother, Mike Kelly (wife Jackie Kelly); and her cherished grandchildren, Makayla Stepp, Meghan Stepp, Keegan Stepp, Connor Coker, and Grace Coker. She is also lovingly remembered by her nephews Matt “Choo” Kelly (wife Lynne and son Jayden), Michael Kelly (wife Julianne and daughters Palmer and Reese), and Jason Kelly (wife Vonna and sons Jet and Ryder); and her niece Laura Lee and her sons Andy Lee (wife Hailey and son Colten) and Jordan Lee, along with extended family and dear friends.

Kathy’s legacy is one of faith, service, hospitality, and enduring love. She will be remembered for her steady presence, her generous heart, and the many ways she quietly cared for others.

The family takes comfort in the words of Scripture:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” — Philippians 4:13

A service to celebrate Kathy’s life will be held on January 17, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Mandarin Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kathy’s memory to Compassion International, a Christian organization dedicated to serving children in need around the world — a cause that was very close to her heart.
